Small Spaces is the first book I've read by Katherine Arden. I also have The Bear and the Nightingale at home, which I'm planning to read.
The first installment of Small Spaces is absolutely enchanting, beautifully spooky, and made a very nice impression on me.
It's purely a horror category for younger readers, but I can assure you that it didn't get in the way at all, because lo and behold, yes, even I, a fairly seasoned horror enthusiast, experienced some pretty unpleasant chills here. And no wonder, when it's packed with a mysterious atmosphere. Above all, don't think those scarecrows on the cover are just for fun.
The characters are beautifully portrayed, they develop gradually as the story picks up pace. I really liked the relationship between the main heroine and her dad, and yes, towards the end you can't avoid touching scenes. Actually, when I think about it, there are more touching scenes throughout the book.
As I already mentioned above, I think it's a great introduction to the Horror genre, whether for younger readers or readers of any age who want to try something lightly horror-ish.
The book has nicely incorporated scary elements. And for me, the combination of fog, a giant cornfield stretching God knows where, and scarecrows worked extra well.
The book reads itself, it's gripping with a well-built story, likeable heroes, and a pretty terrifying villain. I can warmly recommend it ❤️
P.S. the cover is absolutely divine, it completely breathes that atmosphere
