A beautiful companion book from the Grishaverse with gorgeous illustrations.
The atmosphere here is literally magical but also dark, oppressive, gloomy and mystical.
Some stories breathed an almost fairy-tale atmosphere on me, others were quite dramatic with a good ending, and others were really drastic.
There is a lot of emphasis here on people's behavior, on the fact that even though a friendly hand and help is offered to them, some still gladly turn their backs and reject the rescuer, whom they suddenly no longer need — in the better case "just" driving them away, in the worse case dispatching them from this world in a rather brutal manner. There is no shortage of breaking or tearing bodies apart with horses, drowning, starvation, stoning, or burning.
The author doesn't spare the readers, we have sad endings and often very brutal ones, where the main hero, even though he did nothing wrong, ends up at the stake or stoned. But there is also the subsequent punishment of the ungrateful ones, who also do not escape their fate.
The visuals are truly gorgeous and the book will be an ornament in any library.
