I had The Willows on my radar for ages and I'm glad I finally read it.
This book is exactly the type of horror that has just the right kind of unpleasant unease, which gradually escalates and doesn't let you catch your breath.
The atmosphere is absolutely hypnotic – the rustling of the willows, the endless, wild landscape without people and the feeling that something isn't right… but you can't say what. And that's exactly what's the scariest about it.
There were no cheap jump scares here, just pure, oppressive unease that stayed with me long after I finished reading.
For me, it's one of those works that prove fear doesn't have to be seen to be powerful.
