I love autumn, nature puts on its colorful coat, darkness falls faster and there's fog in the morning. We light candles, snuggle into fluffy blankets, and the most fitting reads for this season are spooky ghost stories full of creaking staircases, abandoned corridors, mysterious mansions, mists over the moors, or treacherous heights above a dark ocean.
And this is exactly the ideal book. It has everything it should. With the main heroine, I fear the nights when she hears a strange melody in the old mansion and tries to find out why her nine-year-old ward won't say a single word.
There's no shortage of a peculiar lady of the house with her odd maid. A dark past. In the local village, they tell stories not only about ghosts but also about how the former governess was a witch and the young master, who died under mysterious circumstances, was not exactly a kind child.
I really enjoyed this. I would have shortened it a bit here and there, and at the beginning I was a little worried it would be a rip-off of another famous ghost story, but luckily it wasn't. And that's why I can warmly recommend it — go and enjoy a pleasant scare, and we'll see whether any of you figures out how it really was, or whether the author manages to confuse you a little. It's a lovely ghost story with a detective twist, perfectly suited for this time of year.
✒️👻 Do you like ghost stories, spooky tales — and which is your favorite, whether a film or a book? 👻✒️
