Fracassi got me once already - with Sacculina, which was amazing. Now I have no choice but to sing praises for The Orphanage.
I'm thrilled, the characters here are not black and white, on the contrary gray prevails and I like that. I grew very fond of them and I enjoyed watching their development.
Before the dread strikes in full force, the reader gets to enjoy plenty of quite unpleasant scenes and chills down the spine, because the orphans definitely didn't have it easy. The evil that lurks in people is often worse than any demon.
As the book draws to a close, a proper slaughter begins and one sometimes doesn't know whether they're momentarily rooting for the evil side too. The author doesn't spare us, so those who like explicit scenes have plenty of paragraphs here where blood isn't spared.
And well, the ending, I of course bawled through it like a turtle because it was touching to the core.
One of the best horrors I've read.
