My first book by Mr. @rousek.martin
A book that deals with truly unhappy topics, such as drug-addicted parents, child abuse from a young age, peer bullying, etc.
I'm not used to writing negative reviews and I believe many people liked this book, but unfortunately I have very mixed feelings about it.
In some passages at the beginning of the book, it's hard for me to imagine that a ten-year-old child behaves and thinks that way; it would suit an older person better.
Some phrases didn't sit right with me - for example, tin carriage. Sometimes I had trouble concentrating and really getting into it. And in some cases, the characters' behavior seemed strange, unbelievable, and illogical to me.
I also came across parts that had a great start but somehow fizzled out and weren't fully explained.
The main character is in turmoil the whole time, trying to fight against the Voice that's trying to completely control him. He suffers from long-term memory lapses, often not knowing how he lived for years.
The story takes place in an unspecified city.
I liked that Oskar wasn't entirely bad, he was unfortunately a victim of fate from a young age and tried as hard as he could.
And as for the ending, unfortunately I wasn't thrilled there either, because the explanation didn't sit right with me again — when it was revealed who the Voice was, it didn't work for me.
I liked that two characters I found likable came together.
Just because the book didn't sit right with me doesn't mean I won't read anything else by the author. I have another of his books ready here and I believe I'll like this one.
