I read Salome for the first time and it was a great experience. I know Kryl's song, which captures the plot wonderfully.
Thanks to Olda @zanicenyknihkupec and #klasikomilove I get to discover works I have never read before.
The story is inspired by the biblical New Testament tale about princess Salome and the execution of John the Baptist. It is a one-act drama taking place entirely on a large terrace in Herod's palace.
A tragic story during which one literally loses one's head, packed with suppressed passion and lust.
The bruised ego of a beautiful princess who couldn't handle rejection. The lecherous Herod, who at the end does show some glimmer of mercy, when he almost begs Salome for the Baptist's life. However, the question is whether it's not just to save his own behind. Fear of the punishment that may come. Is Salome really so depraved, or is she only driven by the desire to be loved by someone she actually likes, and not just by suitors drooling over her, including the lustful eyes of Herod himself?
I was fascinated by the reversal of roles, the play read wonderfully.
I also discovered the film adaptation with Al Pacino, which I need to see.
