The Chestnut Man's Bird is the second installment featuring investigator Naia Thulin and agent Hess, characters known from The Chestnut Man, which I have so far only seen as a miniseries.
The Bird will wrap you nicely around its finger and give your grey cells a real workout before you figure out what's going on.
The chilling opening from the past instantly won me over, and of course I didn't figure out at all how it all really was, so I was nicely surprised.
The book is incredibly gripping, there are various detours that are important, and in the end everything is explained and everything clicks into place.
For me, a brilliantly constructed, suspenseful, and at times truly dark story that offers you plenty of interesting characters and a great central pair of investigators. There are also touching moments that aren't forced — on the contrary, they feel believable to me.
I warmly recommend it, and I'll finally tackle my backlog and read The Chestnut Man.
