The Curse of Harrow Lake had been on my list for a long time. I first noticed it at @bookaboutdaniel and I immediately knew I would want to read it.
Although the book has quite contradictory reviews, rather a downward rating, I thought I had to give it a chance and wait to see how it would affect me. And so how did it turn out?
I really liked it, honestly it suited me so well that I was sad it was ending. I actually enjoyed absolutely everything. The atmosphere, the story, the mysterious bogeyman Mister Jitters, with whom I was pleased by how elaborate his legend was.
The whole strange little town, the peculiar characters reminded me of various B-movie horrors that I've seen and like.
The fact that the horror story turns into a psycho-family drama/thriller didn't bother me at all. On the contrary, I liked it more than if it had stayed within the horror enclosure the whole time.
In the book I discovered wonderfully unsettling moments, and that nicely oppressive feeling that I love in horrors.
But so I don't only praise it - there are some confusing parts. The main heroine sometimes behaves illogically, but let's say, taking into account the family circumstances, I wasn't even surprised by her after that.
The book is very much about manipulation and how it completely destroys and changes the victim, to the point that it strongly reeked of Stockholm syndrome to me.
I liked the ending, only a few things were too far-fetched for me.
⛔Critical corner⛔
Also watch out for the blurb on the cover "If you enjoy Stephen King, go for it". It's misleading. It has nothing in common with Master King and his writing style.
Yes, the book is readable and gripping, but luring people in via King is not really a good idea. The rating then unnecessarily drops for the book when readers expect something completely different.
I urgently need another horror💝😍 And if the film Nightjar with Little Bird really existed, I think I would mega enjoy it.
Questions for you:
📌📝 Have you read it and how did you like it?
📌📝 Which bogeyman really scares you?
📌📝 What horror would you recommend to me?
