PŘÍBĚHY ARTHURA GORDONA PYMA

PŘÍBĚHY ARTHURA GORDONA PYMA

The book provided me with a pleasantly dark atmosphere, which was layered with horror elements.
It won me over right from the start, when the main hero and his friend, considerably fortified by alcohol, set out on a voyage that nearly costs them their lives, yet Arthur is so enticed by sailing the sea that he sets out on another one, again with his friend but this time as a stowaway, hidden in the hold. By a coincidence of unfortunate circumstances, he ends up hidden in the hold longer than he himself wanted. From lack of food and especially water, he starts having feverish dreams, wandering and searching for an exit in the claustrophobic hold, and in the end he is finally freed by his friend who doesn't bring good news — a bloody mutiny has broken out on the ship and they are still in danger.
I really liked the passage with the ghost ship, where the entire section gave me wonderful goosebumps. Another superbly unpleasant part is when the surviving crew draws lots to decide which of them will be eaten.
Surprisingly, I also enjoyed the travelogue part.
The ending with the island is also great.

This is Poe's only completed novel, although at times it feels quite disjointed to me and at moments it wasn't entirely easy to read, but as a whole it was great. I'm very glad I read this work.
