If I had to announce the best book of the year right now in November, I think I have my pick. I've had a lucky hand with almost all the books this year, but this one is very special for me.
It takes place in Smíchov, albeit in times past, when the Smíchov I know looked different, but nevertheless, or perhaps because of that, the reading experience was even more powerful.
I have Smíchov in my blood, I lived there from a young age for more than 20 years. It's different than it used to be and there are fewer places that still look the same, but you can't command time.
I enjoyed all the stories, the author has a gift for storytelling and at the end I didn't want to say goodbye.
I really liked that all the stories were from life. Some touching, some sad and others even spooky. Life isn't easy and here it really gave the main characters a hard time many times.
In all the stories there is one mysterious character who is revealed at the end, and I really liked that too, although it occurred to me who it might be and to my great delight I was right.
I can only warmly recommend it and for me it's a huge favorite.
