I'm not often found in sci-fi waters, but this collection of short stories caught my attention because these are the most melancholic stories Martin has written.
They intrigued me, entertained me, and with some of them I was really tense about how they would turn out.
Deep dark tunnels where I followed Gríl, the best of the scouts, who is searching for the Hall of the Ancients from which his ancestors came. At the same time, two Moon-dwellers enter an old metro station and search for their ancestors. How this clash ends, I won't tell you.
In Blokátor I rooted for Kabarejdžan, who is a corpse-driver on the planet Kras. Thanks to his diligence he can even have up to three dead ones who help him during the day with searching for vířeníns, for which he gets well paid. This was a really action-packed ride with the undead, mysterious caves full of danger, and about rivalry and human nature. A friend isn't always the one who appears to be one.
The Second Degree of Loneliness completely shattered me with its ending, a great piece. A glimpse into how loneliness can change a person, how it affects them.
Fog Falls Toward Morning was excellent and sad with a strong atmosphere, I'll gladly return to it sometime.
The Detour to San Breta was another one I liked. A very nice and interesting ghost story, where a strange mysterious car appears on an old highway.
And finally A Song for Lya, beautiful and sad, where everything revolves around a strange parasite that can induce an endless blissful state in its host. Gríška - the parasite god.
