First encounter with the author and I'm thrilled. A story about a young family, where the central couple went through hell and still partly carries the memory of it.
It was dark, painful, and touching.
We also touch on prejudices here, which some people are terribly controlled by, instead of forming their own opinion. The characters weren't spared at all, on the contrary, fate played nastily with them, but they fought bravely.
It was immediately clear to me that there would be something wrong with that house, and one character was also immediately suspicious to me, and I was right about that, but the neighbor's behavior, I really felt sorry for that. What I often noticed was the address 'master' and 'girl' which slightly irritated me, but oh well, it didn't really get in the way that much.
The scenes with animals were sad and also damn scary. While reading, I had this unpleasant anxiety, the author manages to draw the reader into the story very well, and I enjoyed the Romani folklore, which I haven't seen much in books anywhere yet. I expected it wouldn't be a complete happy ending because the darkness that settled on the main characters clings to them and won't leave them just like that.
I really liked the Faustian theme in this interpretation and I can gladly recommend the book and I promise you'll get a nice whirlwind of emotions on top.
