I totally stepped out of my genre pond and tried the erotic novel Neon Gods, which is heavily wrapped in enthusiastic reviews.
Honestly, for a moment I felt like giving up because when it came to the first sex scene, it seemed so descriptive to me, as if I had put on a certain kind of film, ahem.
The beginning was nice, a hint of urban fantasy, interesting inspiration from mythology, and a brisk start.
The main heroine fleeing from a predetermined fate.
The dynamic between the central pair works well, and so if there had been fewer descriptive love scenes for me, I would have been even more satisfied. But so be it, it's an erotic novel, so I can't complain.
But what didn't quite escape me is that the reason for the "gods" isn't really explained here. Some kind of mission of theirs, the reason these titles were created for the most powerful, etc.
Persephone's mother handled supplies, Dionysus parties and illegal narcotics, but what about the others? I think if this aspect of the book had been elaborated on more, it could have been more interesting.
Otherwise, it definitely has to be noted here that the book is not for too young readers — we have descriptive sex scenes, public sex, BDSM.
The greenhouse scene was very nice, and the puppies, well, those made me very happy. The romantic storyline is very nice. I also enjoyed the supporting characters.
Will I read the next installments? If they come out, then yes, I'm curious how it will continue.
