Right at the beginning I'd like to say that I basically liked the book and enjoyed it. Now I'm browsing through various opinions of others about what they liked or didn't like, and I can agree with some things, and some things actually didn't bother me at all in the end. The book was a really nice read for me and even though it's not a very pleasant topic, the pages flew by and the story drew me in. The perpetrator here is the kind of type you can't guess, and there isn't actually any chapter from his perspective, however the explanation of why he did it comes at the end, including how he chose his victims. What's mainly elaborated here is the character of one of the potential victims, who actually didn't have to be a victim at all, but her storyline entertained me a lot. The visual was a bit jarring to the eye due to the alignment and the mystery of the long chapter-less section. There I would say that chapters weren't given because no conversation via SMS or chat was happening, because the font of the chat and chapters is the same. At the end there's again one last chapter containing a chat.
I would also gladly drop such frequent chaptering, when at moments there was one right after another.
But what I really have to speak up about is SINCE WHEN DOES AN INVESTIGATOR PROMISE THE VICTIM'S FAMILY THAT THEY'LL FIND THE PERPETRATOR ehm …
I also enjoyed the illustrations that are in the book.
The investigation dragged on and we rather got to know individual pieces from the lives of the investigators than there being any action, but personally it didn't bother me that much. I liked one nice twist that the story offers and if the author had stuck to this storyline, it could have been quite interesting too. I immediately had a theory about the brother and sister, whom the police went to check on at one point.
I could probably do without the bedroom scenes, which seemed like filler and unnecessary to me.
For me this is kind of a one-bite snack, nothing demanding and fine for a single read with a bit of grumbling.
