The first book of the new year 2025 and I had a lucky hand in choosing it. From a relaxed beginning, when the youngest of the five siblings, Nela, celebrates her birthday and a family celebration begins, the situation dramatically turns when the aunt's dog falls into a cesspit. During the rescue, however, not only is he pulled out, but also a mysterious bone, and the wheels of fate are set in motion.
Wow, I applaud! My first encounter with this author turned out great. I'm thrilled and still surprised. The perpetrator briefly crossed my mind, but I had no clues until the very end.
I usually don't seek out stories about domestic violence because they scare me more than any horror. Here, however, this theme is captured very realistically, including believable dialogues. The portrayal of the individual characters was also great – their personalities, thought processes, everything was perfectly understandable and believable. I felt sorry for everyone involved. The situation they found themselves in was extreme and unenviable.
I enjoyed the reading, the pages flew by, and from the middle of the story I was as tense as a string. It was clear to me that I couldn't expect a completely happy ending.
I have no idea what I would do in Nela's place once she found out everything. She must have experienced anger, incomprehension, shock... but what next? How might the story continue? Would they all be able to come together again after years? It's a difficult question, especially considering what they went through.
I highly recommend it to everyone who hasn't read this book yet, and I'll happily dive into more works by the author.
