I've wanted to read Dead Town for a long time, I was looking forward to walking with the main characters through the little town that became deserted overnight and no one knows where the inhabitants disappeared to. The investigation was unsuccessful, the police never managed to find out what caused such a mysterious disappearance of so many people.
Imagine going to visit an abandoned place like this one. Just the thought gives me chills. Doesn't it you?
Every house and cottage, the school, the mine and the church, all empty.
On the tables in the houses, tin mugs that once held coffee have rusted, in some places clothes have been drying for years, slowly falling apart, only colorful bits of carpets remain, faded by the years. In the buildings the staircases are beginning to crumble and nature is taking its rightful place.
It's to this very place that the main character arrives, wanting to make a documentary, because it's her last chance to make it in the industry and stand out.
She is accompanied by her old former friend, with whom she didn't part on good terms but whose professional skills she now needs, and three other young people. Gradually we learn more about them.
The book is incredibly captivating, I didn't even want to put it down because I was so on edge. By the time the group of filmmakers realizes that this abandoned place isn't quite as empty as it seems and that they aren't alone, it's already too late to escape and the noose is tightening.
It was good, actually quite gripping, I would have given full stars for how much I liked it, but one fundamental thing just doesn't sit right with me. It's actually literally technically impossible and it bothers me, because it knocked down my great enthusiasm a bit, although I'm still enthusiastic enough.
Those who have read it, write to me if anything stumped you there too..
In any case, I can recommend it with a clear conscience, it's gripping, unsettling, scary and great reading.
