The first volume of Puppet really got to me. It seems like a touching story of a father who lost his little son Leaf twenty years ago, and because he's a skilled carpenter who can give life to his creations, he creates his son too.
He brings him to life in the form of a puppet who doesn't have to eat or drink, he just gives him every evening a leaf 🍂 to eat which he really must eat every evening. So twelve-year-old Leaf returns this way to his father Root forever and will never leave him again, even if it costs who knows what.
However, you fairly quickly realize that this touching story won't be so beautiful, you can completely feel the darkness that's beginning to creep in and spread. How is it possible that the father gave his son life in a puppet only after so many years when he could have done it earlier, and is it really the first time or does Leaf just not remember, and what will happen when he meets someone who has seen him before, not long ago, and knows him. Will he start to remember, or will he keep believing his father one hundred percent?
In the city there's a curfew at night, because as soon as dusk falls, some ghostly killer called "the vampire" wanders through the alleys.
And then we also have Dandelion, a girl who claims that she knows Leaf, that she talked to him a year ago and spent time with him, but how is that possible, after all Leaf didn't exist, or is it all different?
Great first volume, I'm totally impatient for the next one.
