I'm currently on a vampire kick so Kolonie was an obvious choice. I love vampire stories, and here I enjoyed the main character, who was really nice.
Overall though, I can't say I'm all that thrilled.
🧛
The story itself isn't bad but something's missing here, there were a ton of names and after a long time I had trouble keeping track, I simply couldn't remember who was who.
The only ones that stuck in my memory were the current sheriff, the original sheriff (now deputy), the main investigator vampirologist Barbara, who was great, and a few other more prominent side characters like the mayor, the reverend whose interesting backstory you learn at the end, or the vampire leader Athelinda.
The atmosphere was definitely there at certain moments but not enough for me.
🧛
A small town cut off from people by bad weather, with a vampire colony practically next door, who are essentially protected, and it's about to break out who's going to go for whose throat (literally)..it could have worked if it weren't so overcomplicated, each of the more prominent characters had their own troubled fate but it held together like a house of cards.
It seems Kolonie will have a sequel, I'll give it a chance but it's hard to say whether I'll be more enthusiastic. There are definitely better vampire stories, this was kind of average.
