This book completely, but completely shattered me into little pieces. After finishing it — and from about halfway through I was crying almost non-stop — I slowly put myself back together again.
A story about old age, which no one can avoid, awaits us all. We follow the main character Bo, who is already at the end of his life. His love is in a care home and no longer remembers Bo or their son, she's already elsewhere, and Bo is kept company by his faithful little dog Sixten and a long-time friend with whom he talks on the phone. Every day caregivers come to attend to him, helping him but unable to stay too long because other clients are waiting for them.
You'll grow fond of Bo and you'll fall in love with Sixten. Even though it's been almost a day since I finished reading it, the book is still working on me. It's incredibly moving, human, about family, about understanding and misunderstanding, about how when there is still time to talk, we should, even though it can sometimes feel hard. And above all, about enjoying every moment with our elders while we still have some time and opportunity.
While reading, many thoughts will run through your head, it may even nudge you a little and help you in many ways.
