Ooo, this book really gave me a hard time. Although the beginning hooked me a lot, after that it was a struggle. I put it aside several times and it took me an unbelievable four months to read. I don't think that has ever happened to me before.
The basic storyline is fine, I've enjoyed magic tricks since I was little, and the terrifyingly brutal beginning promised a great ride, but.. for me a great torment began.
Side characters where I couldn't remember who was who. The central duo at times drove me to despair.
The fact that the book was written by two authors is interesting and for myself I must say that some parts entertained me and others didn't, it alternated, now the question is which of the authors I enjoyed and which I didn't.
The very core of the story is great, unfortunately the surrounding sauce spoiled the impression for me.
If the book had 300 pages instead of almost 600, it would have benefited.
The behavior of some characters is a bit unbelievable, for example the behavior of some of the police officers on the team or the very recommendation of the Mentalist to the team.
I believe the book has many satisfied readers based on the enthusiastic responses, but I'm going against the current, for me it was really unnecessarily too long-winded. Two stars for the dog that appears throughout and half a star for the idea.
