I read The Beast quite a while ago, actually back when it came out, so a light recap of The Beast's plot was a pleasant memory refresher for me and helped me recall the story.
I like Theo, his character resonated with me already in book one, I love his humor and I also like how he's different, how he has his own world.
If you weren't a fan of all the scientific information in the first book, you won't escape it here either, but it didn't really bother me, on the contrary, I learned a lot of interesting and educational things.
The pace of the book suited me, there was no time for boredom and I didn't notice any outright dull spots. Of course, for me, as a layperson, some of the scientific parts were really hard to understand.
Once again we encounter a very interesting case and an interesting investigation procedure.
This time, the mysterious and terrifying figure of the Toymaker appears. I love urban legends, so for me an absolutely great topic. And when you mix in magic, cannibalism and disappearing little boys, you couldn't tear yourself away. In many parts I had chills running down my spine, and properly so. I really enjoyed the read.
And so I'm not just praising here, I was sorry that the Toymaker himself was kind of underdeveloped, the beginning, the legend, the portrayal was flawless but then it felt like it was cut off, such a character with great potential, a creepy legend, downright terrifying but later toward the end pushed to the background, lots of things unexplained, I was missing a bit more substance there.
Some passages are already too far-fetched for me. But as a whole it was really good.
