I'm still riding the horror wave and this time, after a long while, I chose a title in English. The blurb caught my interest along with the fairly nice reviews, and I'm satisfied myself.
The atmosphere is decently built, right from the start it's clear to you that something unnatural is happening in the small town. The local inhabitants have been tormented for years by a creature called Halloween. Night after night it goes "trick-or-treating" and takes away offerings in the form of pets that people always leave behind their doors. The main character is no young man, he's a gentleman in his later years who lives with his elderly father, and we perceive the entire story through his eyes.
The characters worked for me, I worried about some and others I would have kicked in the rear and let the monster devour.
Where Halloween came from and the reason for its actions isn't known, that's the only thing I was somewhat missing, some sidestory where we'd learn more about it, but oh well.
Although the book is slim and it's a novella, it's enough for an atmospheric scary story, I liked X scenes where chills ran down my spine and I rooted for the main character.
I'll gladly check out more of the author's books.
