When I noticed that @goldendogbooks was releasing a book that's supposed to properly turn readers' stomachs, and you even get a puke bag as a bonus in the pre-order, it was immediately clear to me that I'd reminisce about the good old days of being a hardened viewer of various rather extreme horror films and test what my stomach could still handle.
Well, I won't keep you in suspense, the puke bag remained unused, while reading the corners of my mouth probably curled at most in some scenes.
Look, here's the thing, the beginning is fine, nice introduction, getting to know the characters, the guy tries to save his girlfriend from drug addiction and takes her nicely to rehab in remote woods where they're supposed to have peace and quiet. But they're not alone in the forest. A family of deranged freaks lives there, who either ra*e and eat lost tourists, chop them up and screw them again, cut off only the limbs that get in the way, and on and on in a loop, oh and they cook them too of course. Nothing goes to waste.
For me, sometimes less is more. And here I would have cut back because there was just too much of all the repetitive disgusting stuff and it didn't even shock me anymore but seemed pointless. If they'd added more plot, more escalating escape attempts, but this is a flop for me.
What didn't sit right with me was definitely the terribly deserted woods, yeah, and all visitors will just go there for romantic frolicking and ideally within reach of the deranged family's home… or a tub full of semen, a TUB 🛁 yeah read carefully, like how long would the tub take to fill and how many guys would have to contribute for it to be full and usable for submerging a body hmm 🤨
I don't know if it was supposed to be spiced with black humor too but I somehow didn't catch any.
At the end the authors tried to surprise the reader with one more reveal, sorry bros, I saw through you right at the beginning. So if another book comes out, I believe I'll have more fun with it.
