Quite by chance, I came across a recommendation for the folk horror comic Double Walker here on Instagram, and I couldn't believe how great it is. This comic is absolutely amazing. Not only because of its creeping atmosphere but also its gripping storyline and excellent artwork, which underscores the spooky plot.
We have a young American couple here - Gemma and Cully, who are expecting a baby together, and before the little one arrives, they want to take one more trip. So they head to Scotland to admire the beauty of the local nature.
Cully is fascinated by stories about fairies and changelings, and he is interested in various legends and myths.
When he takes Gemma up a hill to see the fairy pools and the beautiful Scottish Highlands, it doesn't end well at all.
Gemma starts feeling unwell, refuses the climb, and agrees with Cully that she'll wait for him.
When Cully comes back down, he finds Gemma lying in the grass and sees that something is wrong. At the hospital, they find out they've lost the baby. Gemma gradually starts to change. And people in the village where they're staying start to die.
A great, dark, scary, and bloody ride full of suspense, creeping dread, and nerve-wracking scenes where you don't expect a happy ending at all. I'd love to see this made into a film.
I really liked the choice of setting and the excellent artwork complementing the suffocating atmosphere.
It was phenomenal and I warmly recommend it.
