Readable, gripping, with a wonderfully dense, oppressive, almost suffocating atmosphere that at times makes you want to glance behind you.
The beautiful descriptions of the marsh and nature in general managed to draw me into the story so much that at times I could picture the place. I let myself be guided by the melancholy croaking of the frogs, I heard the little animals rustling in the tall grass, the whispering of the wind sweeping through the tall reeds.
I enjoyed the story, which is probably why I didn't want to put the book down many times. But a small warning, it's not a horror, this is a gothic novel with elements of mystery. A decently paced family drama, interspersed with diary entries from one of the characters.
Although I couldn't quite form a connection with the main heroine, it didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying the book. I love stories set in old houses and with such beautiful and mysterious surroundings as were here.
I'll gladly read more of the author's books and I can confidently recommend this one. Just as I said, it's not a classic horror.
