Excellent folk horror by Czechoslovak authors.
I liked the combination of the setting of mysterious deep forests and god-fearing, superstitious people.
The book reads itself, because the tension won't let you calmly put it down.
We have plenty of bloody passages here, where not only all sorts of limbs fly through the air but also entrails and so on.
I didn't quite manage to form much of a bond with the main characters, but that didn't bother me at all. I would just have welcomed perhaps more clarification about the mysterious hoofed ones, who are revealed to readers very early on, yet we don't know much about them.
Their ability to hide in all sorts of ways, or their superhuman strength, was slightly downplayed in the final fight, where they didn't always have the upper hand over the humans.
Although I would have welcomed even more developed characters that I could have bonded with, I still had my favorites among them.
Absolutely amazing scenes were the ones with the wolves or the female bear, where I felt a tiny bit unwell at how vividly the authors described the scene.
Aside from a few minor things that I'm happy to set aside, I applaud the authors for the beautifully crafted period folk horror that we don't yet have here. You are amazing and I look forward to you creating something together again.
