The book that enchanted me so long ago slept for twenty long years before I returned to it.
Dust never settled on it, I had it hidden like a treasure. And now, thanks to reading in the #klasikomilove group founded by Olda @zanicenyknihkupec, it earned its place as a bonus read, which I proposed myself, and I'm immensely happy that the members voted for it.
I love this story and I enjoyed reading it to the fullest. Time hasn't changed it at all in my eyes, I still like it and perhaps even a tiny bit more.
But my path to the book led through another huge love of mine, and that is the film version by Mr. Zeman.
I could watch it over and over and never had enough.
I remember how my parents were afraid that the story was too scary at times, and I was really little but I refused to be talked out of it and wanted to watch it again and again. Whenever it was on TV, I would enthusiastically watch it, later I had it on VHS and then they couldn't tear me away at all.
I'd also like to mention that the film has beautiful music that wonderfully underscores the plot.
As for the book, the story is captivating and reads itself. I really liked the setting of the mill on the Black Water. I always liked the characters, and actually the first villain who fascinated me appeared here. Well, when I think about it, just slightly more than the master, in the book I liked the character of Kmotříček (Godfather), even though he only briefly appears at times.
And what awaits you in the book? A fight between Good and Evil, magic, the call of power, a young beggar boy falls into the snares of a dark force. But there is also an emphasis on friendship and pure love, which overcomes all horrors. And make no mistake, this is not a carefree fairy tale, there are really horror elements here and the story is dark.
And what will I tell you in conclusion? Just one thing - read it ♥️ because I believe you'll love the book just as much as I do, Olda @zanicenyknihkupec and the others
